During this period, earthly remnants served as a heavenly connection, and their veneration is a fascinating window into the cultural mood of a region in transition. Brown challenges the long-held "two-tier" idea of religion that separated the religious practices of the sophisticated elites from those of the superstitious masses, instead arguing that the cult of the saints crossed boundaries and played a dynamic part in both the Christian faith and the larger world of late antiquity. He shows how men and women living in harsh and sometimes barbaric times relied upon the holy dead to obtain justice, forgiveness, and power, and how a single sainted hair could inspire great thinkers and great artists. An essential text by one of the foremost scholars of European history, this expanded edition includes a new preface from Brown that presents new ideas based on subsequent scholarship.

Product details

Format Paperback | 224 pages

Dimensions 140 x 216 x 13.46mm | 276.69g

Publication date 25 Nov 2014

Publisher The University of Chicago Press

Imprint University of Chicago Press

Publication City/Country Chicago, IL, United States

Language English

Edition Enlarged

Edition Statement Enlarged edition

Illustrations note black & white illustrations

ISBN10 022617526X

ISBN13 9780226175263

Bestsellers rank 305,814

Download The Cult of the Saints : Its Rise and Function in Latin Christianity (9780226175263).pdf, available at churchoflatoya.com for free.

DOWNLOAD
Bong Hardyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00541344728973160742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5942784914062733695.post-87267317546770162182019-11-08T10:03:00.001-08:002019-11-08T10:03:52.252-08:00A Nongovernmental Organization's National Response to HIV : The Work of the All-Ukrainian Network of People Living with HIV (9789291735976)

The All-Ukrainian Network of People Living with HIV was founded in the late 1990s by people alarmed by the rapidly growing epidemic in their country, and the lack of resources and support for themselves and others affected by HIV. Since then the Network has grown to provide services throughout the country. Key strategy components are: increasing access to care and support; lobbying and advocating protecting the rights of people living with HIV; seeking to increase social acceptance of people living with HIV; and enhancing the organizational capacity of the Network. This short document outlines the development of the Network and highlights lessons learnt, a longer study providing more information about the Network is available on UNAIDS' website.

Product details

Format Paperback | 48 pages

Dimensions 203.2 x 289.56 x 5.08mm | 199.58g

Publication date 01 May 2008

Publisher Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS

Publication City/Country Geneva, Switzerland

Language English

ISBN10 9291735973

ISBN13 9789291735976

Download A Nongovernmental Organization's National Response to HIV : The Work of the All-Ukrainian Network of People Living with HIV (9789291735976).pdf, available at churchoflatoya.com for free.

DOWNLOAD
Bong Hardyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00541344728973160742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5942784914062733695.post-10461103551910504512019-11-06T07:22:00.001-08:002019-11-06T07:22:18.844-08:00The Case Against Education : Why the Education System is a Waste of Time and Money (9781978640986)

Why we need to stop wasting public funds on education

Despite being immensely popular - and immensely lucrative - education is grossly overrated. In this explosive book, Bryan Caplan argues that the primary function of education is not to enhance students' skill but to certify their intelligence, work ethic, and conformity - in other words, to signal the qualities of a good employee.

Learn why students hunt for easy A's and casually forget most of what they learn after the final exam, why decades of growing access to education have not resulted in better jobs for the average worker but instead in runaway credential inflation, how employers reward workers for costly schooling they rarely if ever use, and why cutting education spending is the best remedy.

Caplan draws on the latest social science to show how the labor market values grades over knowledge and why the more education your rivals have, the more you need to impress employers. He explains why graduation is our society's top conformity signal and why even the most useless degrees can certify employability. He advocates two major policy responses. The first is educational austerity. Government needs to sharply cut education funding to curb this wasteful rat race. The second is more vocational education, because practical skills are more socially valuable than teaching students how to outshine their peers.

Romantic notions about education being "good for the soul" must yield to careful research and common sense - The Case Against Education points the way.

Product details

Format CD-Audio

Dimensions 133 x 165 x 13mm | 68g

Publication date 03 Jul 2018

Publisher Brilliance Corporation

Imprint BRILLIANCE AUDIO

Publication City/Country Grand Haven, United States

Language English

Edition Unabridged

Edition Statement Unabridged

ISBN10 1978640986

ISBN13 9781978640986

Bestsellers rank 1,345,764

Download The Case Against Education : Why the Education System is a Waste of Time and Money (9781978640986).pdf, available at churchoflatoya.com for free.

DOWNLOAD
Bong Hardyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00541344728973160742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5942784914062733695.post-45399467268521583302019-11-05T13:33:00.001-08:002019-11-05T13:33:23.226-08:00Quiet Please, Owen McPhee! You don't have to be a chatterbox to appreciate this tale of listening and learning. Owen McPhee doesn't just like to talk, he LOVES to talk. He spends every waking minute chattering away at his teachers, his classmates, his parents, his dog, and even himself. But all that talking can get in the way of listening. And when Owen wakes up with a bad case of laryngitis, it gives him a much-needed opportunity to hear what others have to say. From the author-illustrator team behind The Invisible Boy comes a bright and lively picture book that captures the social dynamics of a busy classroom while delivering a gentle message about the importance of listening.

Product details

Format Hardback | 40 pages

Dimensions 203 x 254 x 10.16mm | 340.19g

Publication date 03 Jul 2018

Publisher Random House USA Inc

Imprint Random House Books for Young Readers

Publication City/Country New York, United States

Language English

ISBN10 039955713X

ISBN13 9780399557132

Bestsellers rank 25,994

Download Quiet Please, Owen McPhee!
Embracing the unifying themes of 'symptom endophenotypes', dimensions of psychopathology that cut across syndromes, and 'symptoms and circuits', every aspect of the text has been updated to the frontiers of current knowledge, with the clarity of explanation and illustration that only Dr Stahl can bring. Integrating much of the basic neuroscience into the clinical chapters, and with major additions in the areas of psychosis, antipsychotics, antidepressants, impulsivity, compulsivity and addiction, this is the single most readily readable source of information on disease and drug mechanisms. Khosa is Given to the Sea, a girl born to be fed to the water, her flesh preventing a wave like the one that destroyed the Kingdom of Stille in days of old. But before she's allowed to dance an uncontrollable twitching of the limbs that will carry her to the shore in a frenzy--she must produce an heir. Yet the thought of human touch sends shudders down her spine that not even the sound of the tide can match. Vincent is third in line to inherit his throne, royalty in a kingdom where the old linger and the young inherit only boredom. When Khosa arrives without an heir he knows his father will ensure she fulfills her duty, at whatever cost. Torn between protecting the throne he will someday fill, and the girl whose fate is tied to its very existence, Vincent's loyalty is at odds with his heart. Dara and Donil are the last of the Indiri, a native race whose dwindling magic grows weaker as the island country fades. Animals cease to bear young, creatures of the sea take to the land, and the Pietra--fierce fighters who destroyed the Indiri a generation before--are now marching from their stony shores for the twin's adopted homeland, Stille. Witt leads the Pietra, their army the only family he has ever known. This Penguin Classics edition is translated by Ronald Wilks with an introduction by Paul Debreczeny.

In the final years of his life, Chekhov produced some of the stories that rank among his masterpieces, and some of the most highly-regarded works in Russian literature. The poignant 'The Lady with the Little Dog' and 'About Love' examine the nature of love outside of marriage - its romantic idealism and the fear of disillusionment. And in stories such as 'Peasants', 'The House with the Mezzanine' and 'My Life' Chekhov paints a vivid picture of the conditions of the poor and of their powerlessness in the face of exploitation and hardship. With the works collected here, Chekhov moved away from the realism of his earlier tales - developing a broader range of characters and subject matter, while forging the spare minimalist style that would inspire such modern short-story writers as Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner.

Ronald Wilks's translation is accompanied by an introduction in which Paul Debreczeny discusses the themes that Chekhov adopted in his mature work. This edition also includes a publishing history and notes for each story, a chronology and further reading.

Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) was born in Taganrog, a port on the sea of Azov. In 1879 he travelled to Moscow, where he entered the medical faculty of the university, graduating in 1884. During his university years, he supported his family by contributing humorous stories and sketches to magazines. He published his first volume of stories, Motley Tales, in 1886, and a year later his second volume In the Twilight, for which he received the Pushkin Prize. Today his plays, including Uncle Vanya, The Seagull, and The Cherry Orchard are recognised as masterpieces the world over.

If you enjoyed The Lady with the Little Dog you might like Leo Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Other Stories, also available in Penguin Classics.

Product details

Format Paperback | 384 pages

Dimensions 129 x 198 x 22mm | 281g

Publication date 18 Jul 2019

Publisher Penguin Books Ltd

Imprint PENGUIN CLASSICS

Publication City/Country London, United Kingdom

Language English

Illustrations note bibliography, chronology, notes

ISBN10 0140447873

ISBN13 9780140447873

Bestsellers rank 44,923

Download The Lady with the Little Dog and Other Stories, 1896-1904 (9780140447873).pdf, available at churchoflatoya.com for free.

DOWNLOAD
Bong Hardyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00541344728973160742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5942784914062733695.post-6097473161079021912019-10-28T09:54:00.000-07:002019-10-28T09:55:02.638-07:00The Sea Gull (9780486406565)

Perhaps the most elaborate and realistic analysis of the life of the tormented artist ever presented in dramatic form, Chekhov's The Sea Gull portrays the struggles of Konstantin Gavrilovich Trepliov to achieve his literary ambitions and win the love of Nina, a would-be actress. Thwarted by his beautiful mother, who feels her advancing age every time she sees her adult son, frustrated by his competition with the successful writer Trigorin, Konstantin's anguish is reflected by the pain of the other characters. His uncle, Pyotr Sorin, upon whose country estate Konstantin lives, regrets all that he has not done; Masha, young daughter of the estate manager, loves Konstantin but marries Medvedenko, the impoverished schoolmaster; Dorn, the local doctor, has never written a word himself but is full of advice for Konstantin. Each reveals the emotional suffering that underlies our lives.
In this and other plays, Chekhov pioneered a new form, Impressionistic Realism, concerned not so much with plot, but with character. Rather than focusing upon action or external drama, Chekhov brings out the inner experiences and reactions of Konstantin and the others. Inspired by a real-life incident, Chekhov uses the death of the sea gull to symbolize the ruined hopes and dreams of all his characters. The Sea Gull is a tragic masterpiece universally hailed as a seminal play, a prototype of 20th-century drama.

Product details

Format Paperback | 64 pages

Dimensions 132 x 210 x 4.57mm | 45.36g

Publication date 20 Oct 2011

Publisher Dover Publications Inc.

Publication City/Country New York, United States

Language English

Edition New edition

Edition Statement New edition

ISBN10 0486406563

ISBN13 9780486406565

Bestsellers rank 579,914

Download The Sea Gull (9780486406565).pdf, available at churchoflatoya.com for free.

DOWNLOAD
Bong Hardyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00541344728973160742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5942784914062733695.post-12251158124758907792019-10-24T04:57:00.001-07:002019-10-24T04:57:18.264-07:00Wayward Son (9781509896882)

Wayward Son, the sequel to Carry On, is the stunning new YA novel by the bestselling author of Fangirl, Rainbow Rowell. And overall Obama's a fun person to sit alongside as she tells you the story of her life . . . it is as beautifully written as any piece of fiction' i

In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America - the first African-American to serve in that role - she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare.

In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her - from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world's most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it - in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations - and whose story inspires us to do the same.

'Offers new insights into her upbringing on the south side of Chicago and the highs and lows of life with Barack Obama. . . a refreshing level of honesty about what politics really did to her. I have read Barack Obama's two books so far, and this is like inserting a missing piece of reality into the narrative of his dizzying journey' Guardian

'I found myself lifting my jaw from my chest at the end of every other chapter . . . this was not the Obama I thought I knew. Relating the history of the war as it developed, Anderson shows how the complex array of forces brought into conflict helped both to create Britain's empire and to sow the seeds of its eventual dissolution. Beginning with a skirmish in the Pennsylvania backcountry involving an inexperienced George Washington, the Iroquois chief Tanaghrisson, and the ill-fated French emissary Jumonville, Anderson reveals a chain of events that would lead to world conflagration. Weaving together the military, economic, and political motives of the participants with unforgettable portraits of Washington, William Pitt, Montcalm, and many others, Anderson brings a fresh perspective to one of America's most important wars, demonstrating how the forces unleashed there would irrevocably change the politics of empire in North America.

Product details

Format CD-Audio

Dimensions 137 x 163 x 42mm | 101g

Publication date 27 Feb 2018

Publisher Tantor Media, Inc

Publication City/Country Old Saybrook, CT, United States

Language English

Edition Unabridged

Edition Statement Unabridged edition

ISBN10 1541418026

ISBN13 9781541418028

Download Crucible of War : The Seven Years' War and the Fate of Empire in British North America, 1754-1766 (9781541418028).pdf, available at churchoflatoya.com for free.

DOWNLOAD
Bong Hardyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00541344728973160742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5942784914062733695.post-57708185415291685412019-10-23T10:57:00.001-07:002019-10-23T10:57:11.551-07:00Handball : Team Sport Gift For Players And Athletes (6x9) Dot Grid Notebook To Write In (9781095823491)

Handball Dot Grid Notebook

An awesome Diary/Journal/Notepad to write in. It is far easier to provide a series of classes while ignoring the more challenging personal components of training. Despite the fact that the therapist's self-insight, emotional maturity, and calm centeredness are critical for successful psychotherapy, rote knowledge and technical skills are the focus of most training programs. As a result, the therapist's personal growth is either marginalized or ignored. The Making of a Therapist counters this trend by offering graduate students and beginning therapists a personal account of this important inner journey.

Cozolino provides a unique look inside the mind and heart of an experienced therapist. Readers will find an exciting and privileged window into the experience of the therapist who, like themselves, is just starting out. In addition, The Making of a Therapist contains the practical advice, common-sense wisdom, and self-disclosure that practicing professionals have found to be the most helpful during their own training. The first part of the book, 'Getting Through Your First Sessions,' takes readers through the often-perilous days and weeks of conducting initial sessions with real clients. Cozolino addresses such basic concerns as: Do I need to be completely healthy myself before I can help others? What do I do if someone comes to me with an issue or problem I can't handle? What should I do if I have trouble listening to my clients? What if a client scares me?The second section of the book, 'Getting to Know Your Clients,' delves into the routine of therapy and the subsequent stages in which you continue to work with clients and help them. In this context, Cozolino presents the notion of the 'good enough' therapist, one who can surrender to his or her own imperfections while still guiding the therapeutic relationship to a positive outcome.

The final section, 'Getting to Know Yourself,' goes to the core of the therapist's relation to him- or herself, addressing such issues as: How to turn your weaknesses into strengths, and how to deal with the complicated issues of pathological caretaking, countertransference, and self-care.Both an excellent introduction to the field as well as a valuable refresher for the experienced clinician, The Making of a Therapist offers readers the tools and insight that make the journey of becoming a therapist a rich and rewarding experience.

Product details

Format Hardback | 240 pages

Dimensions 147 x 218 x 23mm | 370g

Publication date 17 Jul 2004

Publisher WW Norton & Co

Publication City/Country New York, United States

Language English

ISBN10 0393704246

ISBN13 9780393704242

Bestsellers rank 22,071

Download The Making of a Therapist (9780393704242).pdf, available at churchoflatoya.com for free.

DOWNLOAD
Bong Hardyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00541344728973160742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5942784914062733695.post-75162437440395553962019-10-23T00:00:00.001-07:002019-10-23T00:00:40.496-07:00Reading the American Past, Volume 2 : Selected Historical Documents: From 1865 (9780312563776)

A two-volume primary source reader with a wide range of documents representing political, social, and cultural history, Reading the American Past: Volume II: From 1865 shares the voices of an even wider range of historical actors in a manageable and accessible way.

Product details

Format Paperback | 342 pages

Dimensions 150 x 231 x 18mm | 408g

Publication date 05 Jan 2012

Publisher BEDFORD BOOKS

Language English

Edition Statement 5th ed.

ISBN10 0312563779

ISBN13 9780312563776

Download Reading the American Past, Volume 2 : Selected Historical Documents: From 1865 (9780312563776).pdf, available at churchoflatoya.com for free.

DOWNLOAD
Bong Hardyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00541344728973160742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5942784914062733695.post-55071581440194911462019-10-21T09:17:00.003-07:002019-10-21T09:17:40.418-07:00Occupational Therapy in Mental Health (9780803617049)

This is a text we have all been waiting for...I can't help but think that our earlier leaders in mental health- Dr. Adolph Meyer, Dr. William Dutton, and Eleanor Clark Slagle, to name a few- who knew the power of occupation and stressed the importance of engagement in an enabling environment, would be pleased to see this work come to a format that would guide clinicians to make a difference in the everyday lives of people with mental challenges that require the skills of an occupational therapist.'- Carolyn M. In the West, Reiki has been kept highly secret for many years. ESSENTIAL REIKI presents full information on all three degrees of this healing system, most of it in print for the first time. Teaching from the perspective that Reiki healing belongs to all people, Diane Stein breaks new ground in her classic guide to this ancient practice. Although some might see Ankarana's sapphire and ecotourist trades as being at odds with each other, many local people understand these trades to be fundamentally connected, most obviously in how both serve foreign demand for what Madagascar has to offer the world. Walsh explores the tensions and speculations that have come with the parallel emergence of these two trades with sensitivity and a critical eye, allowing for insights into globalization, inequality, and the appeal of the "natural." However, the Vietnam War was the first conflict in American history in which a substantial number of military personnel actively protested the war while it was in progress.

In The Turning, Andrew Hunt reclaims the history of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW), an organization that transformed the antiwar movement by placing Vietnam veterans in the forefront of the nationwide struggle to end the war. Misunderstood by both authorities and radicals alike, VVAW members were mostly young men who had served in Vietnam and returned profoundly disillusioned with the rationale for the war and with American conduct in Southeast Asia. Angry, impassioned, and uncompromisingly militant, the VVAW that Hunt chronicles in this first history of the organization posed a formidable threat to America's Vietnam policy and further contributed to the sense that the nation was under siege from within.

Based on extensive interviews and in-depth primary research, including recently declassified government files, The Turning is a vivid history of the men who risked censures, stigma, even imprisonment for a cause they believed to be "an extended tour of duty."

Product details

Format Paperback | 296 pages

Dimensions 152 x 229 x 16.76mm | 371.95g

Publication date 01 May 2001

Publisher New York University Press

Publication City/Country New York, United States

Language English

Edition Statement Revised ed.

ISBN10 0814736351

ISBN13 9780814736357

Bestsellers rank 1,114,879

Download The Turning : A History of Vietnam Veterans Against the War (9780814736357).pdf, available at churchoflatoya.com for free.

DOWNLOAD
Bong Hardyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00541344728973160742noreply@blogger.com0
